These Orbital models, designed by Dr. A.H. Norbury, of the Loughborough University of Technology, demonstrate the angular distribution of the s, p, d, and f orbitals. They may be used to illustrate a number of aspects of Molecular Orbital Theory and Crystal Field Theory. Being presented in three dimensions they are much easier to understand than two dimensional drawings.
|The models which are 27cm high, are moulded in tough polystyrene mounted
on stainless steel axes. Red is used for the positive lobes and yellow for
the negative lobes. The effect of point charges can be shown by small
white balls, mounted on the ends of the axes to illustrate octahedral
geometry, or on separate frames for tetrahedral geometry. Loose p orbitals
and sp hybrid orbitals are also supplied to slip onto the axes for
demonstrating the forms of various molecular orbitals.
The complete set consists of sixteen models of orbitals: one s, three p, five d, and seven f together with twenty-two sp hybrid orbitals (thirteen with large positive lobes and nine with negative) and twenty loose p orbitals. Also included are nine subsidiary frames to illustrate tetrahedral geometry and sixty small white balls for showing the effect of point charges. Smaller sets are also available and individual models may be purchased separately.
